( hiding from the preceptors has become a habit, nearly second nature. he understands this is his fate and duty as the luofu's high elder, that he needs to be served and watched over, and though they would never dare to look down on his powers, they are there to protect him, too. he understands all of that, but finds it suffocating time and time again. he knows above all else that he's different from his former incarnation, the yinyue-jun before him; that ultimately, dan feng misbehaves, and goes against the preceptors' words, that he gives them too much trouble.
he's hard to control, he knows. for all the things he may be ignorant about for how secluded his upbringing was, this much he's aware of. that the relationship between yinyue-jun and their preceptors isn't one of trust, but something far more complex than that.
a moment of peace and quiet is always what he asks for; that the weight that comes with the burden of his title doesn't suffocate him, that he still remembers he's dan feng, that within his chest beats a heart just as human. he's a known face, as it was the one before him, and the one before that. the reflection on the waters he controls at will yell yinyue-jun back at him, and crouched by the shore of the beaches in the dragonhall vista, he finds irony in it. that despite being under his jurisdiction, as with everything else that is under him, they obey to his title more than his name.
dan feng runs gloved fingers through his reflection on the water, that cursed face that is equal amounts his and not, and rids himself of it, if only temporarily. )
[ Three minutes ago, March had been beside herself with excitement. It had been a thoughtful offer extended by one of the researchers on the Herta Space Station, a newly-discovered curio that was said to be able to allow you to relive the distant past, beyond memories.
Dan Heng had stared at it warily, but Himeko and Welt had been speaking with Asta, and their newest member was off with Peppy doing Something, so March hadn't really had any qualms in reaching for the item. A ribbon, detailed with intricate embroidery, nothing that seemed to be able to do Anything, but as soon as she'd touched it, it had wrapped itself around her wrist and it felt like the ground dropped out from beneath her.
Not a feeling one wants to encounter in space, and especially not one succeeded by falling, so swiftly and sharply that she can't even draw breath in her lungs to scream.
Dan Feng may gently stir the water, cause a light disturbance, but the pink and blue figure that comes hurtling from the sky itself to smack into the water certainly causes waves. There's a small, thin hand that flails about blindly before that too sinks under the water.
Surely nothing to be at all bemused or concerned about. ]
( that's - certainly a first, and it's a good thing dan feng is honed with war and battles, that his reflexes are second to none. he needs not jump on the water to rescue the flailing hand; with them at his disposal, he commands them to swirl around the intrusive body, hugging around her and spitting her back out, laid mostly gently by the sand.
a sudden body falling from the sky is a first when it's not an enemy that he has sent to the waters himself, but the luofu is not currently engaged in battle, nor has he heard any signs related to it. and this girl... well, she doesn't look very threatening, really.
he sits her up, carefully, equal amounts a warrior and a healer. a gentle hand sits on her back as he keeps her head down. )
[ She isn't threatening at all right now. She's bedraggled and drenched, only having vaguely noticed with shock that it felt like the water itself had foisted her out, a brief great, even the water doesn't want to have anything to do with me (an inane thought, brought about by maybe nearly drowning).
March also hardly needs helpful suggestions or orders, either. Whoever's just propped her up has a steady hand, firm but gentle, which inexplicably reminds her of Dan Heng whenever he'd maneuvered her out of danger.
But first, the coughing. It's not at all attractive or impressive, the way her shoulders hunch and she hacks and chokes up all the water she'd swallowed. Which, unfortunately, was a lot. There's absolutely no way to make the noises sound adorable.
Finally, hoarsely, reflexive tears stinging her eyes as she stares at the sand-- ]
( that's an understatement, really. it was certainly a bad landing, made worse likely by the fact she had her mouth open in panic, a natural reaction. she'd have swallowed far less water otherwise, but at the very least he's glad to see all of it is successfully coughed out - as glad as an emotionally inept man can be, since it hardly shows on his face at all.
dan feng waits a few moments, watching the rise and fall of her chest for any abnormalities. she's breathing well, and manages to speak without any more coughs. it's best if she takes some time to steady her breathing, to refill her lungs with air and not water. the hand on her back stays where it is, gentle and careful, until it's made clear that she won't need any more assistance. )
You're drenched, ( a very obvious statement thank you ) and I can tell you're no native to the Xianzhou.
( dan feng pauses here, if only because the words he wishes to say next would counter his desire for peace and quiet. he thinks on it, ) The Alchemy Commission should have a change of dry clothes for you. ( and there's no reason for her to know where that is, and boy if it the luofu's delves aren't a maze to navigate for outsiders, ) I will escort you there, then leave you to the Cloud Knights to bring you to the Seat of Divine Foresight.
( because she is, still, a random girl who fell from the sky of the dragonvista. who's to say she's an ally, especially in such times of war? )
[ Only belatedly does it occur to her to peer (blearily) at her savior, taking in an appearance that is... both incredibly familiar and incredibly not. Dan Heng had looked early unrecognizable until he'd decided to speak and the voice and the uncertain softness in his eyes had been more than enough to confirm his identity.
But this man looks at her as though he's never seen her in his life and truthfully, even if she knows she wouldn't remember it, she's pretty sure that feeling's mutual. Then...
She thinks back to the statue. ]
Dan Heng's... brother?
[ It's not that, is it? But even March knew by now it wasn't exactly that simple, and her confusion only grows exponentially by the second. The Cloud Knights. The Seat of Divine Foresight. The Alchemy Commission. She knows all those terms, but-- ]
Wait, this is the Xianzhou Luofu?? But why am I here? I was just--
[ It is starting to sink in, with a growing air of anxiety and dread, that things went... wonky. ]
